  1. What about the awards for which you had no vote (Vezina, Adams)? How would you have voted, were they, you know, not manipulated by a shady though mostly incompetent cabal?

    1. For Vezina, my vote would have looked like my all-star ballot for goalies. For coaches I'm not sure -- would have had to put some thought into it -- but I'd probably end up voting for guys who were consistently good instead of the ones who have one unexpected good year. The Jack Adams should be for best coach, not most improved team.

  2. Do you have any stats you like to use when deciding on the Selke, or do you just go off the eye test? I think that's one of the tougher awards to give out.

    1. I think you have to rely on numbers, since few of us see all of the candidates often enough to really compare. I look at some of the possession numbers, as well as QoC and zone starts. The latter really only tell you what a coach thinks of a player, but that's an important factor. Coaches are generally smart, and if there's a guy who everyone thinks is great defensively but others on his team have to do the heavy lifting, that tells you something.

  3. Awards are fun to give out and select for. How do they vet voters, though? Who wants voters who don't see many games, aren't vested in the game 100%?

    1. The awards above are all voted on by the PHWA, which is all print/online writers with the exception of a handful of TV guys. So it's either beat reporters who cover a specific team, or the "international" chapter that covers the league as a whole.
