Wayne Gretzky - Revenge is ours (in a passive aggressive and sort of pathetic way)

We interupt Optimism Week for this breaking news.

No, not Maurice getting fired. I mean something we didn't already know was going to happen.

As you may know, hockey-reference.com is now accepting sponsorship of individual player pages. James Mirtle was among the first to notice this development, and as a result he snapped up Wayne Gretzky.

I made a joking offer to James to pay half the fee if he'd change the description, and he's agreed (within reason, of course).

So my question is: what should it say?

The leading candidate so far is simply "It was a high stick". I like this one -- the complete lack of context actually makes it seem funnier to me. But I'm open to other ideas.

So please post a comment if you have any ideas or suggestions. I'd like to let James know some time today.

  1. I like the current idea. I can't think of anything better other than maybe mentioning that it should have been 5 and a game.

For the link, I think a good idea might be to write up a story about the game with that awesome picture.

Might take away from the out of context nature and I love "it was a high stick".

  2. Just to be clear, the idea is that Mirtle keeps the link. We just get the description.

In a way, this makes it even funnier since all the Gretzky fans who see it and think "WTF?" will go yell at him.

  4. Oh yeah, I forgot that Mirtle keeps the link.

I love the idea that people will bitch at James.

  5. Also, my vote is for "It was a high stick".

  6. I like "The Greatest Villain of All-Time". Or, "Co-conspirator of the Greatest Screw-Job Ever in the History of Organized Competition". Or, "where'd the blood come from then, Kerry?"

  7. The other option I liked was something along the lines of: "Former professional hockey player and coach, best known for high-sticking Doug Gilmour in the 1993 conference finals." It's so wrong that it somehow feels right.

Chemmy, I've had that image ready to go for a few weeks. I was going to do a post about the high stick but hadn't got around to it, and this seemed like the right time to unleash it.

  8. What about:

"Best known for high-sticking Doug Gilmour in the 1993 conference finals, costing the Leafs a certain Cup win."

  10. How about making it slightly more personal: "He knows it was a high stick."?

  11. or "Wayne Ogelthorpe - He was aiming for Dougie's eye"

or "It took the greatest game of his career to eliminate the Leafs"

  12. Yes PPP, like, "Gretzky over the Leafs: he had to do SOMETHING"

  13. This is why I hate Leaf fans. In the time since this incident occurred, the Devils have made the Stanley Cup finals five times. The Red Wings have made it six times. But by all means, keep blaming Kerry Fraser for the Leafs' suckiness.

  14. And why didn't you just get your whining asses in gear and win Game 7 at home? You know, like a true champion like Gretzky would have done. But by all means, sponsor Gretzky's hockey-reference page and reduce the greatest player of all-time to the focal point of your pathetic Leaf misery. It's no wonder Leaf fans can't respect greatness...they haven't seen it in fifty years.
