Sundin looking elsewhere?

A pal who was at Sundin's media availability today (after he accepted the Messier award) tells me that he gets the strong impression that Sundin is at least open to hearing offers from other teams.

On top of that, apparently another well-known reporter is telling people that he thinks Sundin is seriously considering signing with Montreal.

This is all speculation at this point. If I was Eklund, I would probably rate it as an e3 and then go back to filming my dog and ignoring the blogger contest.

But I'm gathering torches and pitchforks just in case. Who's with me?

Update: Sundin's direct quote, per Howard Berger:
"The best scenario would be if I ended my career with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but I'm not going to say that I won't be playing anywhere else either... I know I have a lot of options I can explore."

  3. Sundin: "I'd like to konw what's going to happen in the general manager position, whether Cliff is going to be in charge this year or is there a new guy going to be coming in?"
Wouldn't we all, Mats, wouldn't we all...
Note that he doesn't say "or who the new guy is going to be", just "or is there a new guy...?"
    Good question.

If he resigns with the Leafs for a reasonable price, then I'll accept that there was some truth to his whole "bleed blue and white" routine.

Believe me, as a Leafs fan I'm more than eager to be proven wrong here.

  6. I love your passion, but I think if you read what Mats said at the trade deadline, there's no surprise in the fact that he might be playing for another team next season.

  7. I heard him talk like this on TSN and all the blood drained from my body. We see what we want most times, and considering Sundin's character and actions at the deadline, I think he's saying this as leverage in his new contract negotiations.

    Right?

    Right?

Maybe. But then what was all that talk about loyalty and leadership and selflessness? If he's willing to leave now, then explain to me again how his deadline decision wasn't all about himself after all?

I think people perceived Mats' deadline decision through their own lens: some saw tremendous selfishness, some blamed Mats for impeding the Leafs ability to improve via trade and yet others saw great leadership and loyalty.

I think it was exactly what Sundin said it was: He had hoped to retire a Leaf, but the Leafs wanted to trade him. He didn't want to be a rental player so he refused to be dealt.

I'm not aware of any comments from Sundin or J.P. Barry that positioned this as a leadership, loyalty or selflessness issue. Any/all of these adjectives that have been applied to the situation were put there by fans and media.
