The Edmonton Oilers had won the Cup in 1984 and 1985 and had begun to establish themselves as one of the best dynasties of all time. But then in 1986, Steve Smith made his infamous own goal and their chances of getting a 3rd Cup in a row vanished. The next season 1986-87 the Oilers rebounded from their shocking upset and regained the Cup. After Wayne Gretzky received the Cup from John Ziegler, the first player he passed it to was Steve Smith. It was a symbolic gesture meant to erase the memories of the previous year and the look on Smith's face was absolutely priceless.
